For the last few weeks, I have been testing out the Berghaus Stormcloud jacket to see how it stands up as a relatively budget-friendly waterproof jacket for casual hiking and outdoor activities.
Over the years I’ve worn many Berghaus jackets and I’ve always been impressed, but with the Berghaus Stormcloud jacket retailing at a fraction of the cost of some of the other jackets in the Berghaus line-up, I was keen to see whether this really is a great jacket or whether that money would be better saved for an alternative or more premium jacket.

Berghaus Stormcloud Jacket Review
The Berghaus Stormcloud waterproof jacket is a versatile and durable jacket that is ideal for outdoor activities. Its waterproof element is impressive, thanks to its two-layer Hydroshell fabric and DWR coating, which make it perfect for wet and windy conditions.
The jacket’s Hydroshell fabric is both waterproof and breathable, thanks to its polyurethane coating and polyamide strength, although we’ll talk more about breathability below. This combination of materials ensures that you stay dry and comfortable, even during heavy rain or snow. The fabric has a waterproof rating of 10,000mm, which means it can withstand heavy rain without letting any water in.
The Berghaus Stormcloud jacket has an adjustable hood, cuffs, and hem drawcord, which help to keep you dry and comfortable during extended periods of wear. The jacket also has two hand-warmer pockets and an inner pocket for storing small items.
Although the jacket is marketed as being breathable, I found this not to be the case. During a fairly gentle mountain bike ride on a cold January morning, I found that the jacket was very damp on the inside, to the point that the jacket was sticking to my forearms.
This could be a problem for some people, especially if you are planning to wear this jacket for anything strenuous, such as hiking up steep hills.
Pros and Cons of the Berghaus Stormcloud Jacket
- Impressive waterproof element: The two-layer Hydroshell fabric and DWR coating make the jacket perfect for wet and windy conditions. The fabric has a waterproof rating of 10,000mm, which means it can withstand heavy rain without letting any water in.
- Adjustable features: The jacket comes with an adjustable hood, cuffs, and hem drawcord, which help to keep you dry and comfortable during extended periods of wear. The jacket also has two hand-warmer pockets and an inner pocket for storing small items.
- Slim fit design: The jacket is designed with a slim fit, making it ideal for active wear.
- Breathability issues: While some users have found the jacket to be comfortable and breathable enough for their needs, others have reported concerns about the jacket feeling clammy and sweaty, especially during high-intensity activities. The waterproof layer can trap sweat and moisture inside the jacket, compromising its breathability.
- Limited insulation: The Berghaus Stormcloud jacket is not designed for cold temperatures. While it is waterproof, it does not provide much insulation, so you may need to layer up if you plan to wear it in colder conditions.
